Are You Looking for new Shoes? Your Footware is Most Important.
Read what our
Podiatrists have to say…
- Choosing a good shoe:
The shoe is a complex piece of equipment. Always consider the following:
- Function/need of the shoe
- Accommodation for foot deformities
- Materials
- Leather-> breathable, stretches, conforms
- Synthetic-> more water-resistant, elastic, no stretch, less breathable
- Features of a good shoe:
- The rearfoot:
- Firm heel counter
- Minimal heel
- Depth/removable innersole to accommodate an orthotic
- The top (transverse arch):
- Velcro strap or laces which are adjustable to support the top arch of the foot
- Toe-box:
- Shape: conform to the natural shape of the toes
- Width: avoid anything too narrow that compresses the toes together
- Depth: accommodate for any deformities such as bunions and hammer-toes
- Flexibility:
- The shoe should mainly bend where the toes bend naturally, minimize side-to-side
mobility
- The arch:
- Arch support already inbuilt into the shoe may be beneficial for those who require support through this area. The shoe can provide some assistance in supporting the arches, however more specific and aggressive support may be provided with an orthotic device.
